Lexus LS

Price: From £57,263
For: Proper limousine luxury; self-parking function; super-quiet and smooth.
Against: A bit soulless; floaty to drive.
An old-school luxury car in its blocky, slab-sided design, the Lexus LS nonetheless has state-of-the-art technology: it pretty well drives itself, it's so clever. Its two-tonne weight is mitigated a little by the LS 600h's hybrid petrol-electric option (30.4mpg and 219g/km of carbon dioxide), though the more conventional LS 460's a bit of a beast (25.4mpg, 261g/km, Band G tax).
Long-wheelbase versions are offered for the chauffeur-driven, and that's probably the best way to enjoy the LS: it's not the most exciting drive, with its overlight, floaty steering, though it has been much-improved in recent years. We like the reclining, air-conditioned, massaging rear seats.
