The Freelander 2 is so far removed from the first generation model, it should really have a new name. It's leaps and bounds above the problematic first Freelander, not in just build quality but also in the way it drives - both on and off road.
The diesel's the one to go for as it endows the Freelander with more than enough power on the road, and plenty of low-end torque for slower off-road jaunts.
It's not cheap, but it's worth it for one of the classiest small 4x4s around.
