Italdesign was founded in February '68 by Giorgetto Giugiaro and architect Aldo Mantovani and their first production-car commission was from Alfa Romeo.
The pretty 'Sud, launched 1972, seated five comfortably despite its compact dimensions, and even had a large boot. It established Alfa as a real player in the small family car market, setting new standards for sporty handling in the sector: shame it was so poorly assembled and constructed from recycled Russian steel, and thus tragically rust-prone.
Still, it was successful: more than a million Alfasuds (including Sprint coupes, also designed by Giugiaro) were sold 1972-83. Giugiaro went on to design a number of handsome Alfas, including the original GT/GTV, 2600 Sprint, the Alfetta, the 156 and the current 159, as well as the 2002 Brera concept.
