Walk into most living rooms these days and what you see isn't normally a surprise. Cream walls, maybe one with an accent colour or bold print, laminate flooring or cream carpets, faux suede prints on the wall, and you'll probably recognise at least one item that's similar to something you own.
It doesn't stop there. This level of trend following is prevalent throughout the rest of the home as well. Interest in home interiors has increased dramatically over the past few years, boosted no doubt by the choice of home television makeover programmes and magazines that let you dip into people's homes, see how they live, and gain inspiration for your own homes.
But if everyone is following the same programmes and shopping in the same places will we end up with thousands of rooms across the country all looking extremely similar?

The key is to make your home stand out from the crowd but keep it contemporary, according to interior stylist Jo Flahey. She urges clients to create a harmonious and interesting scheme which reflects their personality. 'For example a keen grandmother might have loads of photos of her children and grandchildren on display and feel after watching TV programmes she should declutter. It's not necessary for her to hide them in an album,' Jo explains.
'It can be possible to reframe using a variety of different frames and sizes and create an interesting display. Another example would be the new trend for open plan living. This can be great but if you are a messy cook or you don't want the washing machine or dishwasher to drown out the TV this is possibly not a good idea for you.'
Deciding which colours to decorate our rooms with is also an important yet personal decision as they can have a big impact on our moods. Following trends could be detrimental depending on what colours you feel comfortable with.
'People can be very sensitive to colour and we know by what we wear generally the colours we like and dislike,' Jo says. 'It's not always the best idea to decorate your lounge in lime and chocolate because it's fashionable. If you are someone who usually wears or prefers soft colours you may find the room unsettling or impossible to relax in.'
