George Clarke's step-by-step guide to preparing and painting interior woodwork.
Time required:
About two hours to sand, fill and paint a small to medium window
Cost:
From £10 for 750ml paint, plus around £2 for 10 sheets of sandpaper
Skill level:
Low
You'll need:
Electric sander and abrasive paper; wood filler; filling knife; paintbrushes; clean cloth; masking tape; dust sheets; bucket; sponge; sugar soap or detergent; knotting compound; quick-drying, water-based wood primer; satin or gloss finish paint.
A new coat of paint makes a dramatic difference to any room and you can just tackle a window at a time to make the job less of a chore. Old paintwork may contain lead that can be a hazard if stripped with a heat gun or sander. Buy a lead tester kit from a DIY store to check first.
