7. Tuscany: The Ancient Castle (Image 7 of 11)
If you thought Francis Shaw had bitten off more than he could chew with his Yorkshire Castle Grand Design then spare a thought for Jane and Howard. Anybody who’s tried renovating an Italian property will tell you it’s a minefield of bureaucratic form-filling and endless consultation with a plethora of complex institutions. Once you consider that this particular property is a 1,000 year old castle in Tuscany, a region where planning permission is almost impossible to secure, maybe you’ll start to understand why the Ancient Castle deserves its place in the list of 10 wackiest Grand Designs houses.
The finished home is a labour of love whose spectacular form must be all the more appreciated by the mad owners, who chose to do things the hardest possible way and came out smiling.
