We meet the architect, Stan Bolt, and find out more about the property.
Who are you?
Stan Bolt of Stan Bolt Architects (www.stanboltarchitect.com).
Who were your clients?
The O'Sullivans; a couple with four children.
Was it expensive?
Yes, as the costs were pushed up by the lack of access - all materials had to be delivered by barge at high tide. It cost £400,000 for enabling works and the same again for the build.
What was the concept?
We rebuilt the sea wall and extended it vertically to make the exterior wall of the house. I wanted to give the family psychological and physical protection. The open-plan first floor was purely for the views.
Is it safe in a storm?
Yes; even if the sea wall did collapse the house would still survive as we have built it on concrete piles, so the sea wall acts as cladding, not support.
