Welcome to Documentaries – below you will find what individual commissioners are looking for. We are seeking an exciting and wide ranging selection of films, sereis and projects. We have large number of slots still to commission for 2009.

The best way to work what Channel 4 Documentaries stands for is to watch our recent output – the films we are proudest of. We hope they illustrate our commitment to commissioning a broad range of subject areas, with close attention to finding new and challenging ways of telling stories. A short selection of our recent output includes:

The Family

The Secret Millionaire

Can’t Read, Can’t Write

Lie of the Land

Dangerous Jobs for Girls

Cutting Edge - A Boy Called Alex

Cutting Edge - The Ambulance; Eight Minutes to Disaster

Cutting Edge - The Virgin Daughters

We believe these programmes show a commitment to make programmes that reflect contemporary Britain through the highest quality film-making to be found anywhere on televison. We aspire to win awards, and our track record in that regard is first rate.

The department’s output includes

* major, bold experiments like The Family in which a home was wired with cameras to record real life over four months

* Highly provocative polemical films such as The Doctor who Hears Voices which was a drama documentary exploring extremely radical treatments for mental illness

* Emotionally charged first person narratives like A Boy Called Alex about a boy with life-threatening disease who is also a musical prodigy,

* Surprising and popular films about family life like Thirteen Kids and Wanting More.

The single documentary strand Cutting Edge has been going from strength to strength recently, showcasing important films that, increasingly, are enjoyable and funny in tone.

Our immediate needs – and they are real – are series for mid 2009 to 2010 – these can play at 9pm or 10pm and we are experimenting with a new generation of Docu-soaps and also with presenter-led programmes.

We are also open to ideas and contributions for seasons: The Big Food Fight season harnessed Channel 4’s best known presenters to a single campaign, an there are opportunities for more seasons of this kind in the coming year.

In the Arts I am looking to support Jan Younghusband who commissions prime time events and documentaries such as Operatunity, This Is Civilisation or The Sculpture Diaries, or films such as the multi-award-winning Hunger and large scale undertakings like the Big Art Project.
