Channel 4 New Media was initially set up to develop Channel 4’s online and interactive offering. The division was responsible for Channel 4’s web content and began introducing elements of interactivity into Channel 4 programming, designed chiefly to produce a commercial return.
With the arrival of Andy Duncan in 2004, Channel 4 New Media’s role within Channel 4 has been significantly enhanced. For the first time in the channel’s history, New Media has become an integral part of a three-tier strategy to help sustain and strengthen Channel 4’s unique role in a fully digital world.
With a significantly enhanced budget New Media now faces a challenging dual role; to continue to generate significant commercial revenues for the channel as well as extend its reputation for innovation and creativity into the new media space helping to enhance Channel 4’s public service contribution.
New Media manages and maintains www.channel4.com , Channel 4’s successful website which regularly attracts around 10% of the UK online audience on a monthly basis, increasing to almost 20% whilst Big Brother is on TV. In addition to programming information the site contains a number of key entertainment verticals including 4Car, its successful online motoring magazine /music, our take on the music world and all the best video from C4.
We also operate mobile.channel4.com, which allows users to enjoy the channel 4 experience on the move, together with our C4 mobile tv channel, which can be seen on the Vodafone and Orange networks and the simulcast of C4 and E4 on Virgin Live.
Channel 4 New Media is constantly working to produce innovative products and ideas that are new to the new media space and 2006 saw two significant firsts, the simulcast of C4 online and the launch of 4OD, C4’s video on-demand service, allowing users to view all their favourite C4 programmes when they want.
Early 2007 promises to continue that innovation with the launch of e4.com, a community focused site allowing our audience to enjoy the E4 experience not only on the telly, but also online.
