First shown on Channel 4 in October 2004

The Real Charlotte Grays tells the stories of four women sent to work undercover in Nazi-occupied France by Special Operations Executive (SOE). There were 50 such women altogether, 39 of whom belonged to the little-known voluntary organisation, First Aid Nursing Yeomanry(FANY).

Their clandestine work supporting the resistance in occupied countries was extremely dangerous, and some were captured and tortured, a few escaped or survived the war in prison, and 13 FANYs were executed by the Nazis.

Timed to coincide with the release of FilmFour's Charlotte Gray, based on the novel by Sebastian Faulks, the documentary describes the secret work of these heroic World War II volunteers who won three of only four George Crosses ever to have been awarded to women.

Read about the movie, Charlotte Gray, watch a 12-minute documentary about Sebastian Faulks, the author of the novel on which the film is based, Gillian Armstrong, the director and Cate Blanchett, who stars as Charlotte Gray. And you can see an interview in which Cate Blanchett describes her response to the courageous character of Charlotte Gray.
