Spartacus offers good information on a wide range of historical topics aimed mainly at 5 to 18-year-olds but also of strong interest to adults. Its Encyclopaedia of the First World War contains profiles of combatant states, key player biographies, analyses of major offensives and a helpful chronology.

The National Archive

The National Archives spans 1,000 years of British history. It consists of two parts, both of which have their own websites (accessible from the National Archives homepage): the Historical Manuscripts Commission and the Public Record Office (PRO). The PRO's collection of First World War resource material includes war diaries, orders of battle, war maps, medical records, medal rolls and information on soldiers killed in the war. There is also an excellent and extensive online exhibition devoted to World War I.
