Ekow Eshun

Ekow Eshun

Ekow Eshun is the Artistic Director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), London.

Born in London to Ghanaian parents in 1968, Eshun grew up in England and studied politics and history at the London School of Economics. He worked as Assistant Editor of The Face magazine before being appointed Editor-in-Chief of Arena magazine, becoming, at 28, the youngest ever editor of a men’s magazine. In 1999, he was named by The London Evening Standard as one of Britain’s most talented people under the age of 30.

A passionate advocate of contemporary art and culture, Ekow Eshun makes regular appearances on BBC’s Newsnight Review as well as writing for broadsheets and magazines including The New Statesman and Wallpaper amongst other publications.

He has written and presented several documentaries on TV and radio including Living on the Line, (2000) for which he was awarded, alongside Jon Snow, the Christian Aid Lifestyle Award at The One World Broadcasting Trust Media Awards.

Ekow Eshun is a governor of the University of Arts London (2001 - present) and a former board member of Tate Members (2003 - 2005) and the ICA (1999 - 2003).

His first book, Black Gold of the Sun: Searching for Home in England and Africa was published by Penguin in June 2005.
