Doctor and Surgeon

Doctors tools
Working in accident and emergency as a doctor or surgeon is a demanding job requiring you be skilled at treating and resuscitating patients with serious illness or injuries before they are transferred to hospital wards or discharged, if their injuries are less serious. The work is unpredictable, challenging and often stressful. But it's never dull.

To become an emergency medicine doctor or surgeon requires first that you are trained as a doctor. This requires a degree in medicine at a medical school (attached to a university) which includes clinical placements in a hospital and community settings. This is followed by a two year foundation period where medical graduates are placed in a range of specialty clinical settings, such as surgery and general medicine. Finally you get to specialise in what is known as the run-through period. For emergency medicine this can last as long as six years and involve periods gaining experience in areas such as acute care, anaesthesiology and intensive care medicine.
