In July 2008 Marcello Lippi became the first Coach for 60 years to return to the Nazionale bench. The tactician walked out after lifting the 2006 World Cup, considering it a moral obligation as his son Davide was caught up in the Calciopoli scandal.
In those two intervening years under Roberto Donadoni’s reign and with a quarter-final spot in Euro 2008, Lippi Jr was cleared and public pressure pushed the Coach back into the spotlight.
Although he did not hold any jobs during this time, his club career saw him win five League titles, the Champions League and an Intercontinental Cup.
Before Lippi, only Vittorio Pozzo had made a comeback and in fact he had three bites of the Azzurri apple from June 29 to July 3, 1912, from March 9 to June 2, 1924 and from December 1, 1929 to August 5, 1948, winning two World Cups in 1934 and ’38.
