Blog: President Evil
Palermo President Maurizio Zamparini has already axed Stefano Colantuono and his trigger-happy approach has incurred the wrath of Paul Watson
When it comes to the sack race, Maurizio Zamparini is Serie A's Usain Bolt. Even before the Serie A starting pistol sounded, Palermo's chief had announced his dissatisfaction at his side's Coppa Italia exit and it took just 90 minutes to convince him Stefano Colantuono wasn't the man for the job.

A 3-1 defeat against Udinese was hardly a humiliation. After all, the Rosanero are barely recognisable from the side that finished last season and it will take some time to integrate the plethora of fresh faces. Building a new side takes as much patience as it takes cash.

But patience, unlike money, has always been in short supply for Zamparini - a man who has changed Coach 27 times during his time at Venezia and Palermo. Like a dog chasing his tail, the bemused President keeps chopping and changing when the one thing his club lacks is continuity.

Granted, the money Zampa has pumped into Palermo has helped rejuvenate the great club. And the kind view is that the Udine native is misguided rather than malicious.

However, his explanation of Colantuono's sacking suggests otherwise. “My sporting director wasn't too happy, but I make the decisions here,” he crowed. The words of a megalomaniacal despot with the temperament of a spoilt toddler and a similar level of intelligence.

If Zamparini really wants to see why Palermo aren't able to cement a place amongst calcio's giants, he'll find the answer a lot closer to home. I strongly suggest he take a long holiday on a remote island when the latest lamb to the slaughter Davide Ballardini takes the post - maybe then the new man will have a fighting chance.
